"Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom" - Song of Songs 2:15
A single ant wandered into the room-tiny, harmless, hardly worth the trouble of dealing with. Soon after, another appeared, and then a few more. They didn’t seem like much, so they were often left alone. But as days passed, the ants multiplied. They crawled across the room, even over the body of the one who had once ignored them. What had seemed too small and harmless to confront had now become a nuisance, an invasion. It would have been far easier to deal with the very first ant when it crept in, before it invited the others to follow.
In the same way, how often is “small” sin overlooked? It enters quietly, appearing insignificant, but it never remains alone. Left unchecked, it grows in strength, embedding itself in the heart until it is no longer easy to remove. Scripture warns that “a little leaven leavens the whole lump” (Galatians 5:9) even the smallest compromise can spread and corrupt the whole. It is always better to pluck out sin while it is still young, before its roots run deep.
- How often do I excuse little compromises, thinking they will not take root or grow?
- Am I vigilant to remove sin early, or do I allow it to linger until it gains strength over me?
Even the smallest sin, if left unchecked, can grow and settle deep in the heart. True wisdom is to confront it early, before it spreads and brings destruction.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see the danger of even the smallest sin that tries to creep into my heart. Give me wisdom and strength to confront it early, before it takes root and grows. In Jesus name, Amen.
