How do you respond when you come across a crisis situation? Rely on past experiences? Consult with others who’ve been in similar situations?

In 2nd Samuel 5:17-25, we read about 2 battles that David came across in quick succession. The strategy the Philistines adopted was pretty much the same. V18 & V22 says they spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. But the strategy David and his men used for both battles were different. In the 1st battle, he attacked them head-on; in the second, he attacked them from behind.

The key to his success in both battles is in V19 & 23. Even though both situations were pretty much the same, he didn’t rely on his previous success. Rather, he inquired of the Lord. In fact, the strategy for the 2nd battle seems to be more tedious and complicated rather than the 1st one. Circle behind them, attack in front of the poplar trees, wait for the sound of marching and move quickly. I would’ve rather relied on the simple strategy that got him the success in the first battle; “Go and attack”.

The battle started right after the Philistines heard David was anointed king. We are bound to come across trials, temptations, battles in our spiritual journey. And the attacks will definitely be more intense (v17 says “full force”) when you take up bigger responsibilities in ministry. While it is important to take godly counsel, it is essential that we always “inquire of the Lord” and be prepared to face our battles.
