And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. - Romans 8:28

Paul talking to the believers in Rome says that all things work together for the good of those who love God. He is saying this to people facing severe persecution and trials of different kinds. Paul is not saying that the bad things are good. Rather, that they work together for good (ultimately). Pain, hurt, loneliness, failures, disappointments are all real and difficult. But often in retrospect, we can see that they have resulted in: more intimacy with God, a stronger faith, a better understanding of who God really is - His power and what He can do, more wisdom, the ability to comfort those who suffer and so on. Implied in the verse is the fact that the Sovereign God is in absolute control of every detail of our lives. The devil cannot cross the line that God draws.

God only allows that pain which can transform us into His likeness and can potentially shape us into vessels for His glory. He breaks us to reshape us into something beautiful.

  • What am I struggling with today – a strained relationship, a financial burden, a debilitating disease, a child gone astray, my inadequacy at work?
  • What do I regret having done or not done?
  • What have others done to me that has shattered me?

Know that these too will work out for our good in His time simply because His word is true.

Prayer: Father, help me in my unbelief. Help me look at my situations with the eyes of the truth from your word. May I rest in you at all times knowing that you are in control. Amen.
