In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials 1 peter 1:6
We have already seen the Christians in Asia had to face various trials for their faith. And due to the persecution, all are grieving but peter reminds them that this suffering will not last forever. in this context peter used the word various trials it also means many coloured so it’s not just one kind but many kinds and various types of suffering. the reference to gold tested by fire in verse 7 may suggest images of horrific persecution, such as experienced by the Christians in Rome under Nero. Fire was a common symbol for affliction, adversity, and judgment in both Jewish and Greek thought quite apart from Nero’s actions. Peter is not treating lightly the situations by using the word “it is for a little time”. When we look at new testament, we see from disciples to all followers of Jesus had to go through tough situations of different kinds that was more than what they could bear, but they rejoiced in all this situation. verse 1 to 5 speaks about reason for their joy
- Their hope is a living hope because Jesus has resurrected
- There is an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading
- The assurity of their salvation in Christ
In acts of apostle we see Paul and silas was put behind the bars; but we see them rejoicing and praising God. And bible says the foundations of the jail was shaken by the power of God and jailer got saved by seeing all this. What they have gone through wasn’t easy rather it was painful. But when they choose to prise God in midst of the situations, they saw God’s intervention.
How long should I go through this? We all might have asked this question to ourselves in some situations. its true sometime as peter says we can’t treat lightly what people are going through. But let me tell you “this will not last forever”. The situation you are going through is not forever. Break through will come, his promises will be fulfilled through your life. Though it seems like God is silent, He is not ; He is watching over you preparing you for his purposes. Joseph was in prison though he was innocent, David was being chased by Saul for no reason. Despite of bad situation both of them continue to praise God and laid their burden upon the Lord then we see how God graciously lifted both of them up. Trust in the Lord because the current situation is not the end but its just a reason for God’s glory to be revealed in your life. Paul wrote from the prison “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”.
