Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Jesus said you are the Light of the world. He came into the world as light to the people in the darkness that included me and you. When he left the world Jesus wanted us to continue the work that he has started. So, He expects his followers to be the light of the world.
Jesus used two examples to make it clearer; He said you are called to like the town on the hill that cannot be hidden. As we don’t keep light under a bowl instead, we keep it on a stand to give light to everyone in the house.
So here we are with heart illuminated by the light of the gospel and we are blessed with spiritual gifts that God in his sovereignty distributed to each according to his will and the name of the father is glorified through our good works.
Our light must shine before people to bring glory to God. We must not neglect the God given gifts rather we should use it to eradicate darkness. The apostles of Jesus didn’t bury the gifts and talents but used it for the extension of the kingdom.
We must understand we do not have the light as Jesus had. We receive the light from him. We are like moon that reflects the light of Sun. Jesus said who ever continues to follow him will walk in the light of life. God’s grace is necessary for us to continue to be the light in the world. Just like how we need oil to keep the lamp burning so our lives also.
Paul reminds the Timothy to fan into flames the gifts of God and exorted him to not to neglect the calling on his life. Will our Light be burning at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ? Will we be found faithfully working for our master when he returns? Let’s prayerfully see to that ourselves whether we are being a strength to weak, a light to the one in darkness.
