The portion for the devotion is taken from Luke 12:13-21

When someone came to Jesus asking him to divide the property, Jesus rebuked them and told every one to watch out! Be on guard against all kinds of greed; and Jesus teaches an important lesson about life; “Life doesn’t consist in an abundance of possessions”. And to make this lesson more cleared Jesus shared parable of rich farmer who made fortune out of agriculture.

The story is about a farmer, who became wealthy and wanted to enjoy the rest of his life with the wealth he is created. But God said if I take your soul tonight what will you do with the money you have saved for yourself?

Is Jesus against wealth or is he against saving money for the future? The answer is NO. Jesus did not deny that we don’t have basic needs. He only affirmed that we will not make richer by acquiring more of these things.

Covetousness is an unquenchable thirst for getting more and more of something we think we need in order to be truly satisfied. Jesus made it clear that true life doesn’t come from abundance of things, nor the success or security. This man had false view of both life and death. He thought that life came from accumulating things and death is far away. We see this attitude all around us. Many keep accumulating things believing that the true life can be found in "THINGS". We need to understand the greatest tragedy is not what the man left behind but what lay before him: eternity without God. For many lives, is all about enjoying earthly happiness and ignores everything pertaining to the eternal life.

Can we ask this toughest question to ourselves? If God asks our life tonight, are we ready to meet him? Are we rich towards Jesus?

Jesus concludes the message by saying “this is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but not rich towards God. To be rich towards God means spiritual enrichment and being rich in the matters of God.

Jesus reminds us not to pursue the glories of the world because that will leave us only tiring, wanting, unsatisfied and empty. The true life and meaning of life are only found in Jesus. God alone is true source of life. Everything else are drying fountain. Mark this word Eternity without God is the biggest tragedy.
